How To Make BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches

History shows that pigs were brought over by settlers to the United States. They were left to wander in the wild. Cattle perished in hotter climates but it was a perfect environment for hogs to thrive. Therefore, pork became a Southern meat. In some neck of the woods, the term barbecue is equal to the pork. Try mentioning beef as a barbecue in the Carolinas and they will swiftly show you the door.

The following recipe is an easy-to-follow version of Carolina Style Pulled Pork Sandwiches; otherwise known as Barbeque sanwiTches.

Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Ingredients:

4 Lbs. Pork Loin Roast
1/2 Cup Water
1 Stick Butter (melted)
½ Cup Sugar
1 Tbsp. Crushed Red Pepper
¼ Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
2 Tbsp. Salt
2 Tsp. Ground Pepper
Slaw (See Recipe Below)
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.

Using a large roasting pan, place your pork loin in and add the water. Sprinkle 1 tbs. of sale on the top of the pork loin and then add your butter (drizzling over the top of the roast).

Place the lid on and cover your roaster. Bake the pork loin for approximately 3 ½ hours (or until tender). Remove your roast from the oven, but make sure that you keep it covered.

Allow the roast to sit covered for about 30 minutes, and without opening up the lid (this allows the roast to rest and the juices will seal in).

Remove the roast and then using tongs and a spatula, place the pork loin roast into a large pot or a bowl. Using a pair of tongs and a fork, begin to pull apart the pork. You can also use a meat chopper to cut up the pork, but for the purpose of a pulled pork recipe, use the fork and tongs.

Add the crushed red pepper and the remainder of the salt. Pour in the sugar and the apple cider vinegar. Using your hands, mix the added ingredients with the pulled pork well.

Recipe for Slaw

Ingredients:

1 Head of Cabbage
½ Cup Sugar
½ to 1 Cups of Mustard
1 Cup Mayonnaise
¼ Cup Apple Cider Vinegar (Optional)
Salt & Pepper to Taste
Using a food processor or a cheese shredder, chop or shred the cabbage (the average size of bagged shredded cheese). Add in the mayonnaise. The next step is to use your hands and mix the mayo and the cabbage together. Add the mustard, sugar, and the salt and pepper. Again, using your hand's mix well. Here is when you would add the vinegar, which is optional but adds a more authentic Carolina BBQ taste.

Grab your buns and sear them in a pan or on the grill. Slap on your pulled pork and add the slaw on top. The slaw is optional but definitely recommended.

Note: Add a dab of Texas Pete or Hot Sauce on the top of your sandwich for an extra punch!
